What is a slipper clutch?

A slipper clutch prevents the rear wheel from locking (stamping) when shifting to a lower gear from high speeds.
So if you brake hard in a curve or in front of an obstacle and downshift a gear, the engine brake may take the load off the rear wheel and puncture, causing the motorcycle to lose its grip. This increases the risk of falling or colliding with an obstacle through loss of control.
This is prevented by this special type of coupling. The thrust washer and clutch core are separated from each other, but can be moved against each other by inclined planes with inserted steel balls. The motor is separated from the drive in push mode, so the reaction of the motor brake cannot be transferred to the rear wheel. Instead, the hub rises above the inclined planes, the pressure plates are relieved and the friction disks separate.
If the motor drives the clutch, the energy transfer takes place as with a conventional clutch.

For whom is this type of coupling interesting?

Originally the system was only intended for motorsport, but now it is also used in everyday road use.
Anti-hopping clutches are preferably installed in large-capacity motorcycles with few cylinders. The following rule of thumb applies here: higher torque = more pronounced stamping. For example, they are often retrofitted to the Ducati 1098 or Aprilia 1000 RSV.
